The Launch of Dark Flood
Billy's Song
In the north east of England there is a strong tradition of playing folk music. Many of the songs tell of the lives of people through the centuries. In my story, Dark Flood, Billy teaches Archie to play an old song. I got to wondering what Billy's song from nearly 300 years ago might sound like and I wrote some words. I thought about how many of the young boys had to go down into the hard, dangerous work of the mines and that many were killed. In my song, a mother is remembering her lost son.
My words have been set to music and sung by Verity Alderman. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
Take a look at the area where the story is set, where the industrial buildings intertwine with nature, in the Ouseburn and Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne.
